16 Oct 2004 12 UTC As in the IR10.8 imagery clearly a frontal cloudband can be seen in between Greenland and Iceland. This baroclinic zone is important to
follow in time accurately.
16 Oct 2004 18 UTC The frontal zone moves over Iceland, over the east of Greenland a darkening in the WV-signal can be detected.
17 Oct 2004 00 UTC The dark stripe is now marked by a red dotted arch. This feature is very well related to
the upper level trough at 300 hPa as well as low values of the height of PV = 2 PVU.
17 Oct 2004 06 UTC The dark stripe is extending in S-erly direction, indicating a deepening of the upper level
trough and increasing values of PV.
17 Oct 2004 12 UTC As the dark stripe moves further south it starts to interact with the frontal cloudband:
the cloudband starts to wave as a result of the positive vorticity that comes with the dark stripe.
17 Oct 2004 18 UTC
Now the dark stripe is close to the frontal cloudband and the interaction increases and the dark stripe turns
into a typical dry intrusion, which is a sign for a rapid cyclogenesis.
18 Oct 2004 00 UTC The mature cyclone is now clearly visible in this channel. The dark stripe is still expanding
in a southerly direction.
18 Oct 2004 06 UTC The dark stripe is expanding further south.
18 Oct 2004 12 UTC The cyclone is almost stationary located at the south of Iceland.
18 Oct 2004 18 UTC The dark stripe which started as a small disturbance developed as a large elongated feature. From East
Greenland towards the south and curving back in northerly direction towards Iceland.
19 Oct 2004 00 UTC The elongated dark stripe with a dry intrusion near the cyclone can still be detected nicely. It still increases
in size.
19 Oct 2004 06 UTC Now the elongated dark stripe is gradually losing structure, which prohibits the system
to develop further.
19 Oct 2004 12 UTC Still an elongated dark stripe can be seen from Greenland curving towards Ireland, however
the connection towards the cyclone is not existing anymore.
19 Oct 2004 18 UTC The darks stripe is still visible, but the cyclone lost its structure completely.
The convective features can be seen well in the WV6.2 images, indicating high cloudtops.
