Vertical Cross Sections

In this chapter vertical cross sections are used to investigate the vertical structure of the atmosphere within and in the vicinity of the frontal system.
The vertical cross sections reveal the three-dimensional dynamics of the cold front.

Summary
The vertical cross sections show that the cold front was intense during the whole time period. The prefrontal region as well as the cold front is characterised by an unstable stratification. Convergence within the front and in front of it extends up to the middle troposphere and ascending motion extends sometimes throughout the troposphere. Cold advection at low levels was intense. It was also present at middle and upper levels, in the first VCS.
