EUMETSAT Data services short course at EGU 2021

26 April 2021 / Online

With the new EUMETSAT satellite programmes, the volume and complexity of the data products will increase significantly, making it unfeasible for traditional workflows, relying on accessing local data holdings, to exploit these observations. EUMETSAT's new Data Services address this issue.

In this short EGU course participants will learn:

  • what EUMETSAT offers the geoscience communities within Europe (Data Store, Data Tailor, and EUMETView)
  • how to set up access & use the GUIs and APIs, Jupiter notebooks and documentation

The Data Store provides online access for directly downloading satellite data via a web-based user interface and APIs usable in processing chains. Users can download the data in its original format or customise it before download by invoking the Data Tailor Service. EUMETView provides access via standard OGC Web Map, Web Coverage and Web Feature Services (WMS, WCS, WFS) which visualise data available in the Data Store. It is accessible via a web-based interface and APIs allowing the integration of visualisations in end-user applications.

This short course is open to all attending the EGU and will give you an introduction in how to use the services.

High Impact Weather Summer course and webinar

5 April - 3 May 2021 / Online

A four-week long online course focusing on the use a forecasting method based on Doswell's ingredient-based forecasting method IBM (1996), is being held in April. This method assumes that three ingredients are needed for convection: moisture, lift, instability (and vertical wind shear to take the modes in convection into account).

The course consists of online reading materials, quizzes, teleconferences, real-time cast studies, and discussions. The reading material should take about four hours per week per topic to complete.

The primary audience for the course is forecasters working in the operations. The participants are expected to already have basic experience of forecasting summer convection. The course might also be of value to meteorologists who are interested in synoptic and mesoscale phenomena.

The course is free and open to everyone (Eumetcal Portal account is required).

Two webinars will be organised, the first on 12 April at 9:00 UTC, and a second one yet to be announced. Register for the webinar

New training module on Lee Cyclogenesis

Online

A new training module on lee cyclogenesis is now available on the EUMeTrain website.

Cyclogenesis at the downwind side of mountain ranges is a well known, and a frequently observed, phenomenon. But even if lee cyclogenesis is a common phenomenon, those cyclones do not always develop into mesoscale frontal systems. While their formation is tightly connected to orography, their further development is subject to the same mechanisms as the development of extra-tropical cyclones in general; it depends mainly on triggers from the upper troposphere.

In this training module on lee cyclogenesis, the influence of these triggers on (lee) cyclone development is explained, and their impact is illustrated by several showcases. The chosen examples are located at the western part of the Alps, a region that is know for the so-called Genoa cyclogenesis. In the module, prerequisites for lee cyclogenesis are explained, as well as the involved physical principles. Emphasis is made on the fact that without the necessary triggers, lee cyclones do not become mesoscale cyclones independent from the local mountain effects.

The training module also focuses on two regional weather phenomena that are closely related to Genoa cyclones: the Mistral and the Bora. The local effects of Genoa cyclones in form of abundant precipitation influenced by orography are highlighted.

Course: Synoptic and Mesoscale System Analyses 2021

11 Jan 2021 to 28 Feb 2021 / Online

Since 2012, courses on Synoptic and Mesoscale System Analyses have been organised by Eumetcal, in collaboration with EUMeTrain and the DWD (course management). The basic concept is a blended course, a combination of an online phase (self-study, live presentations, playground sessions, short tests, and homework for students) with a one-week classroom phase at the training centre of the DWD in Langen.

In 2021, due to the pandemic, the course was delivered fully online. The community’s interest in the course was overwhelming: more than 150 applications were received and 71 participants were invited to take the course.

Six trainers (Wilfried Jacobs, (DWD), Jurgen Buelens (Meteo Wing-BAF), Rob Groenland (KNMI), Vesa Nietosvaara (EUMETSAT), Peter Schmitt (DWD) and Andreas Wirth (ZAMG)) designed the course materials, guided the students during their work, and evaluated students’ work. Many students exhibited high interest and activity. Fifty-eight students received a certificate of successful participation.

The course content was in accordance with the WMO-requirements "No 1083, BIP-M".

MTG 3T Forum Workshop

8 to 11 Mar 2021 / Online

The Expert Forum for Preparing MTG Meteorological Applications and Training had their first workshop, from 8 to 11 March 2021. The workshop had more than 70 participants from around the globe. As well as being packed with informative presentations on new products and applications aiming to prepare users for utility of next generation of EUMETSAT data, the workshop was also a great opportunity for experts to get insights into each others' MTG-related work.

The first two days were focused on the utility of MTG-like data (related mostly to future FCI and LI instrument capabilities) in different application areas, from aerosol detection to convection. The third day was dedicated to MTG Forum Group networking and processing and automated exploration of the MTG-like data. Plans and views related to exploration of the future geostationary data within institutes and agencies around the globe were presented during the last day, even touching on the 'fourth generation' of geostationary missions.

Details on the workshop agenda.

EUMeTrain Snow Event Week

8 to 12 February 2021 / Online

Snow in its various forms is a topic that accompanies and challenges many meteorologists in their work. No matter where and how it appears, it follows the same physical processes, but the circumstances, the methods for detection and measuring the impact, and the combination with other weather events can differ significantly. It is, therefore, crucial to know about those differences, about possibilities, and new developments.

To facilitate a successful exchange of knowledge in the field of snow, EUMeTrain organised an Event Week on Snow in February 2021. A very broad line-up of experts from all over the globe gathered to discussed topics such as: winter convection, snow measurement, satellite observations /data/ products, snow on radar and in aviation, avalanches and snow modelling, climatic changes of snow cover and snow amount, touristic aspects in the Alps, snow as a natural hazard, snow at the North Pole and in Siberia, and even lake and sea ice.

The recordings of the sessions can be watched online at http://eumetrain.org/events.html.

A big thanks to everybody who contributed to the great success of this event!
