High reaching opaque clouds (e.g. frontal cloud bands or meso-scale convective systems) depict in blue colours in the IR+HRVIS RGB. As shown in the right-hand example (cold front), the main cloud band exhibits a blue colour. Though HRVIS shows high intensities, the blue colour beam is prevailing because of very cold cloud top temperatures. The blue colour intensifies at the rear side of the cold front as the opaque clouds are replaced by thin cirrus clouds. Ahead of the cold front, lower and warmer (less blue intensity) clouds are seen.
