Meteosat Second Generation

Day Microphysics RGB - Recipe

Red: VIS0.8
Green: IR3.9R (solar component)
Blue: IR10.8

Low water clouds

Low level water clouds in the Day Microphysics RGB depict in white shades. All 3 colour beams contribute with approximately the same intensity. Very low water clouds as can be ssen over the Black Sea turn into blue, because IR10.8 intensifies with increaing temperatures. When getting colder, the clouds turn into rose (Ukraine). The red colour beam (VIS0.8) increases on the expense of the green and blue colour beam. The Day Microphysics RGB is perfectly suited to distinguish snow (red) on the ground from low level water clouds (white).
