Identify patterns in LST maps
Consider the following image showing the minimum LST observed for a 10 days period (from 1 to 11 September 2014) (Copernicus Global Land LST product) over Israel and the Sinai Peninsula.
Choose the right position
Taking into account what you've learned about LST, identify the following features in the image:
- A roundish region where the minimum temperature does not fall as low as around it, i.e., the city of Tel Aviv.
- A valley region in Israel.
- The region where minimum values are observed, corresponding to a mountainous part of the Sinai Peninsula.

Temperature maps
The following group of images comprises monthly mean temperature maps for December 2015 at 12:00 UTC with the following variables:
- MSG LST (LSA SAF LST product)
- ECMWF 2 m air temperature
- ECMWF Soil temperature at level 1 (7 cm)
- ECMWF Soil temperature at level 2 (21 cm)
Match the legends to the images
A | B | C | D | |
MSG LST (LSA SAF LST product) | +
ECMWF 2 m air temperature | +
ECMWF Soil temperature at level 1 (7 cm) | +
ECMWF Soil temperature at level 2 (21 cm) | + |
Temperature daily cycles
The next figure presents the hourly development of three parameters over a given site in southern Portugal in 3 February 2016. The parameters correspond to 2 m air temperature measured at a ground weather station, and to ECMWF soil temperature (21 cm) and LST as measured by SEVIRI onboard MSG, as computed by the LSA SAF (these two selected as the nearest locations to the weather station). Considering what you have learned, match the correct parameter to the curve.
Match the following colors to the curves!
1 | 2 | 3 | |
LST from SEVIRI MSG (LSA SAF product) | +
T2m measured at the weather station | +
ECMWF STL2 | + |
Pixel heterogeneity
Recall the graphic from Chapter 3 representing temperature variation at a validation station in Senegal, where the four curves correspond to temperature measurements at different surface endmembers: Crown-sunlit, Background-shaded, Background-sunlit, Crown-shaded.
Match the correct surfaces to the temperature variation curves:
Red | Green | Blue | Black | |
Crown, sunlit: | + | |||
Background, shaded: | + | |||
Background, sunlit: | + | |||
Crown, shaded: | + |
