Thermal Front Parameter and Isotachs at 300 hPa

The maximum values in the field of the TFP (blue solid line) is indicating the location of the fronts. The TFP is close to the rear side of the cloud band which spread from the north of the Great Britain to the south of Scandinavia. The second maximum of the TFP can be seen west of Great Britain, also indicating the frontal zone.

The main TFP maximum is related to the warm front, whereas in the region where the intensification occurres there is no elongated TFP maximum as would be expected in the region of the cold front. However, frontal character of that cloud band is still recognizable through several TFP maxima. The strongest is seen in the area of the cloud enhancement.

The frontal cloud band over Germany and Poland has intensified and the TFP has increased.

At this stage TFP connected to the cold front is more pronounced and elongated. The jet crosses the frontal cloud band almost perpendicularly.

The situation is similar like a six hours before. What can be noticed here is that TFP maximum is divided into two parts - one in the region of the main cloud enhancement and the other, northeast from the first one, in the region of the newly developed intensification.

The frontal character of the cloud band is still evident. The angle of the jet with the frontal zone is now different, but jet still crosses the front.

Further propagation of the cold front and the TFP. This is a typical situation where the TFP characterises an air mass boundary separating the warm air mass from the colder one.

The system is moving far to the south-east.

The cold front is slowly dissipating and the TFP decreasing.
